According to Atkin’s carb counter there are 4.6 grams of carbs in 2 tbs of hummus.

There are 16.2 grams of carbs in 1/2 cup of Chickpeas.

My cat eats 2 tablespoons before deciding she doesn’t like something.

Here’s the link to Atkins’ carb counter– scroll down, it’s on the bottom right.

Note most low carbers when they start out are eating 20-30 g carbs a day (S. Beach, Atkins, and Protein Power, NOT the Zone, Sugar Busters, Carb Addicts’ Diet), and then gradually increase over time.

Yes. It’s even a Phase 1 food in the South Beach diet so it must be really OK.

Don’t forget you can subtract fiber grams from carb grams, and I imagine there’s a fair amount of fiber. But beans are not allowed on Atkins induction (first two weeks, or more if you want to lose faster), which is super low-carb. I think they’re ok in the later stages.

I do not normally eat hummus because it is hard to stick to just a few tablespoons!

I put it on high-fiber tortilla wraps with spinach and tomatoes, for my work lunch. I only need a few tablespoons, and the container’s at home so I can’t eat any more anyway!

My cat loves hummus, every kind I’ve offered him so far- lemon, scallion, garlic, plain.. he’ll even try to knock it out of my hand.

wow, nice to see others with my problem:) i stopped keeping hummus round home because i would just eat it all rather than the schmear on a sandwich or something. weak-willed I am. if however, you are making sandwiches for work, etc. i think its a great low-carb, good-for-you food.

I recently found single-serving containers of Sabra’s at – of all places – Starbucks. They’ve been my salvation because otherwise, I just eat it with a spoon.

I’d think it’s mid-range. There’s a lot of carbs in chickpeas, but a lot of fiber too. And the tahini/oil in hummus slows down the absorption of sugar.
