Best sides for a steak

I bought two beautiful sirloin steaks at the local butcher today. I plan on grilling them up tomorrow for dinner. What do you normally serve as side dishes with your steak? I’m looking for a starch and a veggie dish. Thought I’d pose the question to the experts :). Thanks for your help Chowhounders.

I like the classics. Potatoes (baked or scalloped or frites), creamed spinach, and a green salad. If you want to go really old school, make it a wedge salad with bleu cheese dressing and crumbled bacon.

cauliflower, green or yellow beans, fried mushrooms, some big salad, roast veg . . . as well as what the man with the hat said.

Thanks for the feedback a&A. I do usually go with the classic stuff alan mentioned—and it’s great—cauliflower and yellow beans I never thought about….hmm. Still open to suggestions and I’ll report back on the fianl meal. Thanks for all your help. It is much appreciated!

My personal favorite is a baked potato loaded to the max and roasted brocolli – works out great because the potato and the brocolli go right into the oven, obviously not at the same time.

I also always have to have a salad….with steak I like a crisp iceburg salad with tomato, hearts of palm and a blue cheese vinagrette as opposed to the traditional creamy blue cheese.

something we always had, which is not traditional but goes great, is a side of fettuccini alfredo. mmmmmmmmmmmm yummy!
